A Walk on the Wild Side

One of the most enjoyable stories this year on Ros na Rún has been the downward spiral of Niamh Ní Shé from the studious and reserved daughter of a Garda Superintendent to a rebellious college student experimenting with drugs and succumbing to the pressure of her peers. My only worry is the danger that this story may fizzle out and be forgotten when it’s clearly one that has more in the tank and should be revisited in the not too distant future…

This week saw Niamh’s on again/off again boyfriend Evan Ó Conghaile (who seems to be doing well despite his Rapid Aging Syndrome kicking in the year before last – seriously he should still be about 13 years old) help Niamh see the error of her ways and inform dodgy companion Adam that she was taking a step back from the fast and furious lifestyle she’d been living recently and refused his offer of recreational pills.

Hopefully there’s more to come in the story and Adam will attempt to sway Niamh back to the dark side, as it has been nice having Niamh and Evan at the forefront of the drama and the storyline will certainly resonate with the post Leaving Cert age group. Not to mention Méabh Ní Chualáin, Colm Ó Fatharta and Seán Ó Baoill have excelled in their roles as Niamh, Evan and Adam respectively.
